January News

Happy New Year!

We hope that all of our families enjoyed the winter vacation followed by our most recent long weekend for students.  We look forward to a few solid full weeks of school before our February vacation. Our faculty celebrated our return to school with a Memorial School Pride Day. Faculty and staff sported our new “Spirit Wear” on Friday, January 6th. Students were excited to see us all in Memorial Gear. (See photos below).

Wednesday, January 25th marks the halfway point in our school year. Over the next several weeks, we will be reflecting on our school year thus far and setting school goals related to our progress in showing Cooperation, Acceptance, Responsibility and Effort. We will hold school-wide assemblies and celebrations to mark our progress on our journey. Please continue to ask your child about how they show C.A.R.E.File_000.jpeg

Cold Weather Reminders

We make every attempt to get students outside for fresh air and exercise each day. While we do not like to call indoor recess, there are times when we must to ensure the safety of our students and staff. When making this decision, we consider the actual temperature, the wind-chill factor and the condition of our school yard. When sending your student to school, please ensure that your child is prepared to go outside for recess. Weather conditions change frequently during the course of the day and it is difficult to predict what the weather will look like during recess time. Several teachers have recommended that students transport their winter gear in reusable grocery store bags. These bags are easy for children to carry and seem to be the perfect size for boots, snow pants, hats and mittens. Parents are asked to put student names or classroom numbers on all winter gear so that we can help reunite items with owners should they get separated.

Reading Assessments

Students at Burke-Memorial will participate in the mid-year GRADE assessment over the next  week. The GRADE (Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation) is a diagnostic reading assessment that determines what developmental skills students have mastered and helps us examine where students need instruction or intervention. The paper and pencil assessment will be administered in two 45 minute sessions over the course of two school days. Once teachers have the opportunity to review the results with reading specialist, general assessment results will be shared with parents. These results are expected to be sent home some time in February and will help guide our instruction.

MCAS Update-

2017 “Next Generation” Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Test (MCAS) Information

This spring will mark the first facilitation of the Commonwealth’s next assessment model for grade 3-8 students.  District leaders have been attending webinars and working with colleagues in the field to ensure our best understanding of the assessment requirements.

At Memorial School, our third grade students will participate in paper and pencil testing in English Language Arts and Mathematics. State guidelines require that our fourth grade students participate in computer based testing in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

The assessment window has been set by the state and is as follows:

English Language Arts Grades 3 & 4   --- April 3- May 3, 2017

Students will participate in three testing sessions during this testing window

Mathematics- April 4th - May 26, 2017

Students will participate in two testing sessions during this testing window

Specific details about testing dates will be sent home to parents once our school testing schedule is finalized. Please keep this general testing window in mind if you are scheduling medical appointments.
