Curriculum Night Follow-Up

It was wonderful to see so many families at our Curriculum Night events last week. We hope that you learned more about your child’s day and came away from the event feeling confident about your child’s educational experience. At my opening presentation, I provided families with a few reminders. I’ve highlighted some of them below:

  • We want to partner with you. If you have concerns, suggestions or compliments, let us know!

  • Your child’s teacher should  be your first point of contact.

  • Children should be at school as close to 8am as possible. Instruction starts at 8:15am.

  • If your child walks or rides the bus to school, create an after school safety plan with your child.

  • If your child will be absent, contact the attendance line by calling 508-321-4732.

  • Any same day changes to your child’s dismissal procedures which occur after the start of the school day must be called into the office 508-533-3265 x 0

Please continue to reach out to your child’s teacher should you have additional questions as the year progresses. We look forward to working with you and anticipate  a successful and collaborative home-school partnership.

Summer Reading Goal Achieved!

Student Celebration Scheduled

Congratulations to our students for accomplishing their summer reading goal. Today we discovered that our students collectively logged 232,345 minutes of summer reading! We will celebrate this accomplishment tomorrow with a school-wide outdoor assembly. Top readers in each grade along with all students who logged summer reading minutes or returned reading logs will be entered into a drawing to participate in a faculty version of “Drip, Drip, Drop.”

For those of you unfamiliar with this popular Field Day game, Drip, Drip Drop resembles Duck, Duck Goose. However, in this version, the student who is “it” will be holding a cup of water and dripping water on instead of tapping the head of the faculty members sitting around the circle.   It is sure to be a memorable event!

BOKS Before School Program

Registration Alert

BOKS is coming to Memorial!  BOKS is a program that aims to give kids a body and brain “boost” that will set them up for a day of learning. At Memorial, there will be two before school sessions each week. It is a program sponsored by Reebok, and being funded by the Medway Foundation for Education. The program details are as follows:

Who are the instructors?  The program will be taught and supervised by Marissa Keleher, Science/Technology teacher, as well as parent volunteers.

Who can attend?  The BOKS program is open to all second, third, and fourth grade students at Memorial.

When will the program be held?  The program will be held on Monday and Friday mornings from 7:15 - 8:00 a.m.  The dates of the session are:

    October: 17, 21, 24, 28, and 31

    November: 4, 7, 14, 18, 21, and 28

    December: 2, 5, and 9

*Please note there are no sessions on November 11 (Veteran’s Day) or November 25 (Thanksgiving break)

Children will participate in the program for 45 minutes in the Burke gym and go directly to school from the program to their classrooms at 8:00 a.m.

How much is the program?  Thanks to the generous funding by the MFE, the program is free!

What does a typical class look like?  A typical class includes drop off and free play, meeting and warm up, running related activity, skill of the week, end of class game, and cooldown and nutrition tip.

What do parents/guardians have to do?  Parents/guardians are responsible for making sure that their child arrives at Memorial promptly at 7:15 for all sessions.  If you are interested in having your child participate in the BOKS program, you must complete the online registration form and submit it by Friday, September 30, 2016. In the event of a greater than anticipated response, a lottery may be necessary.  If so, the lottery will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Upon confirmation of your child’s enrollment in the program, parents/guardians will be sent all necessary registration materials.

We hope you share our excitement in bringing this fabulous program to Memorial!

Tea with the Principals

Elementary school principals will again host Tea with the Principals throughout the school year. These informal meetings will provide parents with the opportunity to meet with the elementary school principals. During these meetings, principals will provide updates on activities at the elementary schools and answer general questions that families may have. Our first Tea  will take place in coordination with the MEPTO Welcome Reception on  Tuesday, September 27 th, at 6:30 p.m. at  McGovern School.

Medway Elementary Parent Teacher Organization Meetings

Prior to the meeting, there will be a  small welcome reception at 6:30 p.m.  Parents new to Medway Public Schools and parents who have never attended a MEPTO meeting are  especially welcome.
