April 13th Superintendent's Message

Dear Medway families,

It is hard to believe that April vacation is upon us.  It is wonderful that Spring has finally arrived.  As we prepare for the upcoming break, we wanted to share information and updates about district activities. May and June will be full of opportunities to celebrate student success; we are hopeful that you will be able to join us.

Sincerely,

Armand Pires, Ph.D.

Superintendent

2017-18 School Calendar

For your convenience here is next year’s school calendar.

2017-2018 School Calendar

FY18 Budget Approved

During the April 6 School Committee meeting, the Superintendent’s Recommended Budget was approved by the School Committee.  This budget represents a 2.8% increase over the FY17 budget.  Additionally, the School Committee approved utilizing an additional ~$207,000 in School Choice revenue to offset the difference between the anticipated support the town will be able to provide the schools in FY18 and the requested bottom line.  A complete presentation of the budget can be found here.

McGovern Elementary Principal Search

Thanks to our community members for the support and feedback offered during this very important process.  We are excited to share that Ms. Christina Cooney has agreed to join the Medway Public Schools as the next principal of the McGovern Elementary School.  As shared in prior communications, Ms. Cooney was one of three candidates brought forward to spend a day interacting with students, staff, parents, and leadership throughout the district.  She was regarded as poised and knowledgeable and we expect a high level of continued success at McGovern for the students, faculty and staff under her leadership.  A brief description of her background can be found below.  Ms. Cooney will be spending some time in the coming months visiting with Mrs. Y. during this important transition.

Ms. Cooney is currently an Administrative Intern and Literacy Specialist at the Isaac Sprague Elementary School in Wellesley, MA.  Previously, Ms. Cooney worked as first grade teacher in Wellesley and as a bilingual teacher in grades 1, 2, and 3 in Framingham, MA. Ms. Cooney received a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University. Ms. Cooney is also expected to complete her Master of Education in Educational Administration from Endicott College in July 2017.

Superintendent’s Task Force on Middle School Recess

Ryan Sherman, Ph.D., Director of Wellness  and Assistant Principal Paul Gamache are looking for interested, elementary, middle and high school parents to join the Superintendent's Task Force on Middle School Recess.  This task force, made up of administrators, parents and teachers, will be responsible for comprehensively examining opportunities for recess at the middle school level, including potential advantages and challenges.  The task force will meet once a month, after school, during the months of May, June, September, October and November.  If interested, please complete this form: Recess Task Force

Legally Blonde, The Musical JR

Congratulations to the cast, crew and families supporting the cast and crew of the middle school production of Legally Blonde, The Musical, Jr.  It was great to see our students with such a high level of comfort on the stage, enjoying themselves and the spotlight.

Cultural Proficiency Partnership

Thanks to our families who joined us for our second conversation around race on Monday, April 3.  We learned some concrete strategies and clear language in support of our work with our children, both as parents and as educators.

We have included a few of the “words of wisdom” from our learning to share with our greater community.

School Calendar

As you are aware, at this time we have had THREE snow days.  Whenever we have a snow day, the last day of school is changed.  At this time, our last day of school is anticipated to be WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2017.

Community Workshop:  Promoting Wellness and Social-Emotional Learning

We will offer a second opportunity for our families to participate in the Promoting Wellness and Social-Emotional Learning presentation on May 2, 2017 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM in the HS Library.  Director of Student Services, Kat Bernklow and Director of Wellness, Ryan Sherman, will co-facilitate this session. We hope to see many of our families at either of these two presentations.

Next Generation MCAS

A couple of weeks ago, we welcomed some families for a Superintendent’s Chat to share information about the Next Generation MCAS.  We have included a copy of the presentation that was shared here.   Below, please also find the master schedule for assessment throughout the district as well as a link to Web-based practice tests that are available for anyone to review.

2017 Special Olympicsspecial olympics.jpg

Congratulations to our exceptional student olympians for an exciting and fun day of competition on the basketball courts at Medfield High School on Friday, April 7, 2017.  It was terrific to see our athletes engaged in friendly competition and have such a great time doing it!

Next year’s 5 Town Special Olympics comes home to Medway with the theme of soccer!  Special Olympian, Chris Tocci, is featured receiving the torch from Medfield to signify Medway’s future host responsibilities.

Update on Route 109 Project

As has been shared on through town communications, progress on the Route 109 project continues.  Here is the latest information that was shared with us.

Drainage work will begin again this week and continue for several weeks.  Multiple crews may be working at two to three locations along the route.  This should have minimal impact on travel.  Two lanes will remain open until 9 am each day and work will be over for the day in time for the evening commute.

At some point in May there will be extensive work done at the intersection of Route 109 and Holliston Street with the construction of a retaining wall near the Charles River Bank.  Similarly, culvert work at Choate Park will be extensive.  This is likely to have a large impact on traffic getting through both the intersection and the Lincoln Street areas.

Reclamation work is scheduled to begin in June or July.  Jersey barriers will be placed along the construction route creating two lanes that will shift as work necessitates.  This will likely slow traffic along Route 109 significantly.

It is expected that 2017 road work will have a considerable impact on traffic in Medway.  Please support local businesses, but use alternative routes when appropriate.

As a reminder, there is a dedicated webpage<http://www.townofmedway.org/route-109-transportation-improvement-project> for this project where you will find the latest updates.  The Town will also post weekly updates on social media.  You can also subscribe<http://www.townofmedway.org/subscribe> to receive weekly email updates.
