August 20th Superintendent's Message
August 20, 2016
Dear Medway families:
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We hope that this unusually sunny summer has provided you, your families and friends many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. As communicated earlier, we have been busy preparing for a great school year. Please review the following important information and updates to best prepare you for the start of school.
Armand Pires, Ph.D.
First Day of School
The first day of school for student in grades 1-12 will be Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Students and families in our PreSchool and Kindergarten classrooms will participate in an orientation program on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Kindergarten Orientation will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m.; AM PreSchool Orientation will take place from 10:00-10:45 a.m. and PM PreSchool Orientation will take place from 1:00-1:45 p.m.
2016-2017 Bus Routes
As shared in a previous communication, the district recently acquired new bus routing software. This decision was made for two reasons. First, in anticipation of the Route 109 construction project, and the expectation that it will result in delays and closures at different times, this product will assist our work to make changes to bus routes, and communicate them to families quickly. Second, it is important that we ensure our bus routes are developed with the highest level of efficiency. This software will assist us in accomplishing these goals.
The 2016-2017 Bus Routes are now available on our website: and can be accessed here: 2016-2017 Bus Routes
Please know that the Medway Schools works closely with both Holmes Transportation and the Medway Police Department to address any concerns that are raised. If you have any concerns or questions about bus transportation, you are encouraged to contact your child’s school. You may also contact Don Aicardi, Director of Finance and Operations (email@example.com), with questions or concerns. In your email, please include all pertinent information.
Route 109 Project
As you are aware, the construction and improvement of Route 109 has begun. The Town has a page on their website dedicated to providing regular updates on this project. The page can be accessed here. The information on this page will provide a useful resource as the project progresses and results in traffic changes. You can subscribe to weekly email updates here.
Exciting news! We are pleased to share that Newsweek recently released its ranking of top public high schools in the United States and Medway High School was ranked 11 of 18 schools in Massachusetts who were listed on the national list and 312 of 500 schools nationally.
The link to an article about the rankings can be found here. Congratulations to our MPS educators and administrators for their hard work to ensure a very high caliber education for our students.
We will be welcoming 18 new educators, 3 new administrators and several support staff to our Medway Schools this fall. Next week, our new educators will participate in a two-day orientation program. This program allows us to share our educational values with our new teachers and ensure that they get off to a great start. We will be highlighting our new staff in the next edition of The Education Express, our online newsletter, which will be published around mid-September.
We continue to review and refine our methods of communication. As you know, on-going communication has taken many forms as technology continues to change. What has not changed is the power and effectiveness of dealing with questions and challenges at the level closest to our students. It is important for families to reach out when they have questions or concerns. When doing so, please be sure to communicate with the individual or individuals that have the information necessary to answer your questions or bring your concern to resolution.
District wide communications from the team at central office will come to families once or twice each month with information relevant to our entire school community. We share these communications through emails that are provided by families at the beginning of each school year. Should communications require a higher level of sensitivity or urgency, these written/email communications will be accompanied by a phone call through this system which will share a recorded voice message on the topic being communicated.
It is important to us that our community have a strong understanding of the activities and initiatives taking place within our schools and district. This work continues to provide our students with the most relevant and supportive learning to foster continued growth.
Over the past few years, our administrators and teachers have increasingly used Twitter as a communication tool. Twitter provides us with a great opportunity to share information with our community in short, informative snippets. Please see below for official Twitter handles of our schools and the district.
