February 9th Superintendent's Update

Dear Medway families,

We hope that this note finds you well and enjoying the start of the shortest month of the year.  As we have now crossed the halfway mark of the 2017-18 school year, we have been engaging in deep discussions connected with the plans for the future.  Below, please find several important updates.

Armand Pires, Ph.D.

Budget Development Update

As you may know, the 2018-2019 Medway Public Schools Budget is currently in development.  At the February 15, 2018, Superintendent Pires and Mr. Aicardi, Director of Finance, will present a preliminary budget to the Medway School Committee.  We are appreciative to the Town for providing additional resources to the District through funding from Exelon.  The presentation will be available on our website following the meeting.

Math Curriculum Review ~ Parent / Guardian Survey

As a district, we are committed to ongoing reflection and refinement of our various curriculum areas.  The Medway Public Schools has developed and implemented curriculum review processes over the last few years in an effort to ensure that the time is cleared and focused for these meaningful reviews.  Outcomes of these reviews have included the addition of positions, resources, and targeted professional development experiences.  These reviews are foundational to a continuous learning process.

Beginning during the 2016-17 school year, we engaged a team of educators representing the PK-12 spectrum within the school district to review our mathematics curriculum (content, assessment, and instruction).  This team is near the end of the Self Study phase of this work but needs your help to complete this process.   An essential element of any curriculum review process is the qualitative information that we are able to garner from students, educators and families. To that end, we would like to request your participation in our Mathematics Curriculum Review Parent Survey (just click to participate).  We ask that you please complete the survey once for each child.  The survey will be open until the end of February, 2018.  Thank you!

Kindergarten Recommendation at the School Committee Meeting

Last Thursday, Dr. Pires shared his recommendation with the School Committee to transition to Tuition Free Full Day Kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year.  An article highlighting this recommendation can be found in the Milford Daily News here.

Library Task Force Presentation at the School Committee Meeting

Last week, Assistant Superintendent, Gabby Abrams, shared an update with the School Committee connected with the conversations that have been taking place within the Medway Schools Library Task Force.  This Task Force has been researching options for a potential re-design of our library spaces to support our aspirations to enhance the collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication opportunities for our students.  The presentation that was shared can be found here.

High School Program of Studies Presentation

Also at the last School Committee meeting, High School Principal, Tim McCarron  shared the Medway High School 2018-19 Program of Studies.  That presentation can be viewed here.

Kindergarten Registration for 2018-2019 School Year

Kindergarten registration packets are now available for parents either online or to pick up in the McGovern Elementary School Office, 9 Lovering Street or at the Medway Public Schools Superintendent’s Office, 45 Holliston Street (door #4). These packets should be completed and returned at the time of registration.

Kindergarten registration will be held in the Library of the McGovern Elementary School, 9 Lovering Street, on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

To be eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year, a child must reach the age of five (5) years on or before August 31, 2018. It is not necessary for the child to accompany the parent/guardian to the registration. A kindergarten screening program for students will be announced at a later date.

Preschool Lottery Information Announced

During the 2018-2019 school year, the Medway Public Schools will offer three sections of integrated preschool programming, two half day sessions and, we are excited to share that there will also be a limited number of full day preschool slots for which  students will be selected through a lottery process.

Integrated preschool is overseen by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).  This is mandated to ensure that eligible 3, 4, and 5 year-old children with disabilities are appropriately identified as eligible for special education and receive developmentally appropriate special education and related services designed to meet their individual needs.  This is in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act - 2004 (IDEA-2004) and Massachusetts Special Education laws and regulations.  Part of the service for these students includes the integration of non-disabled peers who are available as peer models.

If you wish to be considered for this program (either the full day or ½ day sessions), integrated lottery forms are now available for parents either online or to pick up at the Office of Student Services, 45 Holliston Street (door #4). These forms are to be completed and returned to the Student Services Office by Thursday February 22 at 2:00 p.m.  We will be conducting a public lottery on Friday February 23, 2018, at the McGovern School at 9:30 a.m.

If your child’s name is chosen through the lottery process, we will contact you.  Please note that we cannot guarantee any particular session for your child. Once the lottery system is completed we will maintain a waiting list with the remaining names.

Once the lottery process is completed and students are identified, the, integrated preschool registration will be held in the Library of the McGovern Elementary School, 9 Lovering Street, on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Medway Sports Updates

Congratulations to the MHS girls basketball team who won the TVL title this week! It was a special night as it was also Medway youth basketball night for the younger girls as well as senior night. This Friday, February 9,  the girls will travel to Millis where senior captain, Riley Childs, who is just 15 points away from achieving 1,000 points, may reach this milestone.  It will be a very special night for Riley, the team and Medway girls basketball. Congratulations also to Medway Track’s Ava Vasile, who was named MVP of the Tri Valley League!

Special Olympics

The 6th Annual 5 Town School Day Games are well into the planning stages and are scheduled for March 23, 2018.  Medway Middle School will host the games this year and, once again, Medway’s theme is soccer.  Unique within the Commonwealth, the 5 Town School Day Games are the result of an ongoing collaboration among Medway, Millis, Medfield, Ashland, and Holliston in an effort to provide our students and families with the excitement, social networking and feel of a hometown games despite the relatively small sizes of our towns.  During these games, students will have the opportunity to participate in the traditional Opening Ceremony, compete in more than five activities and be awarded for their accomplishments.

The 5 Town School Day Games has announced a tasty fundraiser! The group is partnering with Chipotle to raise money to support the annual games.  The fundraiser will take place on February 27 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Chipotle, 5 Franklin Village Drive, Unit 1.  Merely mention the 5 Town School Day Games and Medway, bring in the flyer, or show the flyer on your smartphone, and 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics 5 Town School Day Games.  The flyer is here:   Special Olympics fundraiser.
