No School Reminders

This is a reminder for families that this Friday, January 12, 2018, is a Professional Development Day for faculty and staff and there will be no school for students.  Monday, January 15, 2018, is also a no school day in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

Snow Day Reflections The weather conditions of last week created great challenges to us as we aimed to ensure that our students’ safety was the primary driver in school cancellation decisions.  While Thursday’s decision to cancel was a relatively smooth process, the lack of clarity regarding the state of the roads and windchill impacts created a much more challenging decision making process heading into Friday.  Please know that the decision whether or not to cancel or delay the start of school is a collaborative process involving multiple contributors within the town and school departments.  We make every effort to ensure that our decisions are well informed and, of the greatest importance, student safety focused.

Math Curriculum Review ~ Parent / Guardian Survey

As a district, we are committed to ongoing reflection and refinement of our various curriculum areas.  The Medway Public Schools have developed and implemented curriculum review processes over the last few years in an effort to ensure that the time is cleared and focused for these meaningful reviews.  Outcomes of these reviews have included the addition of positions, resources, and targeted professional development experiences.  These reviews are foundational to a continuous learning process.

Beginning during the 2016-17 school year, we engaged a team of educators representing the PK-12 spectrum within the school district to review our mathematics curriculum (content, assessment, and instruction).  This team is near the end of the Self Study phase of this work but needs your help to complete this process.   An essential element of any curriculum review process is the qualitative information that we are able to garner from students, educators and families.  To that end, we would like to request your participation in our Mathematics Curriculum Review Parent Survey (just click and go to participate).  We ask that you please complete the survey once for each child.  The survey will be open until the end of January, 2018.  Thank you!

Community Bulletin Board The Medway School District values multiple methods and modes of communication to most effectively keep our students, families, faculty/staff, and the greater community updated on the happenings within our school and greater community.  Our Community Bulletin Board hosts a great deal of information for families about events and information throughout Medway.  If you have not already done so, please subscribe to receive weekly updates connected with the Community Bulletin Board by clicking here.  Once on the page, you will be able to select the groups with which you would like to be associated.  A direct link to see the items on our Community Bulletin Board can be accessed by clicking on the Community tab, then Community Bulletins on the Medway Schools website.  A direct link can be found here.

Day of Giving Back

Medway’s 2nd annual Day of Giving Back (Day of Service last year) will take place on Monday, January 15, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, in the Burke Memorial Cafeteria.  This event is a collaboration between a Senior Girl Scout troop and the Medway Schools.   The event will involve many options for members of our Medway community to engage in service.  If you are part of a community organization and would like to sponsor an activity during this event, please contact Lisa Lekas at llekas@verizon.net.  If you would just like to come to Burke-Memorial to participate in a service project, we hope that you will.  All are welcome to attend!

Women in STEM Club - Speakers Wanted

Once again, Medway High’s Women in STEM Club will be hosting its annual school-wide STEM Fair. Our goal for the fair is to encourage exploration into the wide variety of STEM-based careers.  This program aims to help students grasp the transcendence of STEM skills and knowledge into all aspects of our world. We are looking for professionals with engaging STEM projects or stories they are eager to showcase to high school students. This year’s fair will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018.

If you are interested or know anyone who may be interested in creating and facilitating a 35-minute interactive workshop or presentation this year, please reach out to Dr. Shanley Heller at sheller@medwayschools.org.
