June 7, 2018 Community Update

Dear Medway families,

As the calendar turns to June we have been spending rewarding portions of our days and evenings in the midst of celebrations of student successes.  We have provided many highlights of these celebrations and the work of the district below, as well as on Twitter and Facebook.  We wish you a wonderful end of year and look forward to seeing you at the upcoming student celebrations.

Scholarship and Awards Night and Medway High School Graduation

Last week’s Scholarship Night at Medway High School featured a wonderful celebration of the talent and contributions of our graduating seniors.  236 scholarships totaling well over $100,000.00 were awarded to our students to support their post-secondary success.  Congratulations to all who received awards.

The beautiful weather on Sunday provided the perfect setting for a truly wonderful graduation ceremony for the Medway High School graduating class of 2018.  Special thank you to Principal McCarron, Deans List and Pearl, Athletic Director Pearl, our senior class advisors, Mrs. Rojee and Mrs. Brodeur for the time and effort that went into making this such a special event.  We wish our students and their families and friends much goodness and success in their future endeavors!  An article about the day can be found here.  In addition, you can watch a recording of the ceremony on http://www.medwaycable.com/.  A photo montage of our senior walk through all of our schools can be found here.

Congratulations to our graduates and their families!

Medway High School Scholastic Awards Night

Congratulations to our many grade 9-11 students for being recognized for high achievement during last night’s Scholastic Awards Night!  It was a wonderful night celebrating the achievements of our MHS students.

1:1 Student Device Initiative Expansion

Medway Public Schools is proud to announce the expansion of the 1:1 Student device initiative to 8th through 12th grade in the 2018-19 school year. Information regarding the deployment dates, device use and maintenance expectations, and insurance options are being shared with families. For our students and families with devices from our pilot year, information about renewing accidental insurance coverage will be sent to the email on file. The insurance opt-in window will be August 15th to September 15th. Be on the lookout for more details!

Website Survey

In an effort to continue to improve the ways in which we share information and provide clear access to programming for our parent/guardian community, we have identified a task force to look at transitioning our website to a new platform. We are asking our community to please provide us with feedback through a survey so that we can best address the identified areas of need as well as to understand the most frequently used aspects of our community web page.

To complete the survey and help guide our decisions, click here.  Thank you!

Strategic Plan Mid-Cycle Review Process

This mid-cycle review process has been a productive support of our on-going work to support both student and professional learning.  If you have not already done so, all community members are encouraged to engage in the survey completion, if possible.  A link to the Strategic Plan Mid-Cycle Review survey can be found here.

District Improvement Plan Update

At the May 17 School Committee meeting, an update to the District Improvement Plan was given.  The presentation can be found here.  We will be sharing the 2018-19 District Improvement Plan with the School Committee at an upcoming meeting.  This Plan will include specific metrics that we are looking to use as measures of success or progress.  This plan will represent some of the emerging themes that have come out of our Strategic Plan Mid-Cycle Review process.

Fine and Performing Arts Congratulations!

Congratulations to our middle school choral groups who performed at the high school on May 23.  Their growth as ensembles this year was evident.

Great job to the high school honors students and our vocal and instrumental ensemble groups who showcased their talents at the MHS Chamber Concert and Honors Recital on May 24.

Congratulations to our Burke-Memorial 4th grade students as they participated in their annual Memorial Day performance on May 24 and 25.

Congratulations to our Burke-Memorial artists, choral and band students for a successful turn out at their annual Arts Night last night.

Congratulations to our middle school band for a great night of performances on Wednesday.

McGovern Walk to School Day

Our K-1 students took part in the biannual tradition of walking from the V.F.W. to McGovern last Thursday morning.  Brad Shoenfelt, McGovern Wellness teacher, organizes this tradition, which is supported by the Medway Police Department.  This event is a wonderful way to reinforce the benefits of walking as a form of physical activity and to build community.  It was another highly successful event and we were glad to participate!

MHS Civil War Kiosk Display

Last week, the US History I classes participated in the annual Civil War Day. This year we were lucky enough to have local author and Civil War historian, Mr. Tom Ellis, share his knowledge. Mr. Bob Collins and former MHS graduate, Mr. Steven Collins, returned this year to set up a reenactment camp for students to explore. As part of this project, the kiosks on the Wellness Walk were filled with student work in an exhibition-like flow.

If you would like to take a walk on the Wellness Trail, take your smartphones with you as QR codes will offer you a guided tour created by our students, which includes a presentation on the role of Medway citizens in the war. We invite all members of the community to take a walk through history on the trail. An enormous thank you to Mr. Rojee and all of our US History I teachers for coordinating this great event!

Mathematics Curriculum Review Process ~ Visiting Team

Last week, the final phase of our Mathematics Curriculum Review Process concluded as we welcomed educators from surrounding districts to validate the findings from our Self Study.  The three days of the visit included classroom observations of practice, conversations with educators, parents and administrators, review of student learning information and other documentation, and a great deal of collaborative dialogue in support improvement for our Mathematics curricular program.  Many thanks to those families who completed the survey as well as those who were available to meet with our visiting team.  We anticipate receiving the final report during the summer and will begin action planning immediately as a priority for the 2018-19 school year.

Senior Prom

On May 18, Medway High School hosted their prom at the New England Aquarium.  Students left from Medway High School and spent the evening dancing among the penguins and fish on Boston Harbor.  It was a beautiful night and lots of memories were made.

Medway Alumni Association Reunion

A tradition for 134 years, the Medway Alumni Association Reunion was held May 19 at the Doubletree Hotel in Milford.  Armand Pires, Superintendent, Gabby Abrams, Assistant Superintendent, Medway High School administration, and class advisors were all in attendance.  The class of 2018 was inducted into the Association and was walked in with the class of 1968.  Class of 2018 President, Kyle Stapleton, addressed the group as well.  It was a great night for Medway.

Spring Sports

Our spring sports regular season wrapped up last week.  Congratulations to all of our spring athletes for their commitment and hard work!

Three athletes competed at the Massachusetts State Championship: Abby Greeley in long jump, Nicole Ellis in discus, and Lucas Bittig in long jump and 100 meters.  Abby was named state champion in her event.  She will be competing in the New England Championships this Saturday at the University of New Hampshire, which will conclude the track season.

The boys ultimate frisbee team completed their season at States this past Saturday.

Student Shadow Day Experiences

Armand Pires, Superintendent, Gabby Abrams, Assistant Superintendent, and Kat Bernklow, Director of Student Services took part in shadowing one student in each school over the last few months.  These experiences of shadowing students throughout the district provided them with special insight into our students’ experiences and they look forward to continuing this practice next school year.  Thanks to our students for allowing us to shadow.
