October 25th Superintendent's Update

Dear Medway families,

Although it has not felt like it, we are approaching the end of October.  As October comes to a close, so will the first quarter of the school year. Over the next few weeks there are many opportunities for parents to engage with our schools.  Please mark your calendars so that you can take advantage of these opportunities.   Please find details of upcoming events, as well as important information about our schools below.

2017 MCAS Results

In the coming week, our grade 3-10 families will be receiving a report that communicates how your child(ren) performed on the Spring 2017 MCAS assessment.  As you know, students in grades 3-8 experienced the first year of a new assessment in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics.  Science assessments (grades 5, 8 and 9) and the high school English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments were in the same format as has been given in the past (legacy MCAS).  Additionally, all students in grades 4 and 8 participated in the mathematics and English Language Arts assessments on the computer while the other assessments were conducted in the traditional paper-based format.

Individual schools will be communicating with you regarding opportunities to learn more about the information gained from this assessment.  We will host a Superintendent Chat on the 2017 MCAS on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Presentation Room at Medway Middle School.  All families are welcome.

McGovern Walk to School

Our fall “Walk to School Day” was held at the McGovern School on October 12th.  The event was organized by Mr. Shoenfelt and was supported by the Medway Police Department,  Principal Cooney, as well as the entire McGovern faculty and staff.  Nearly all of our K-1 students made the ½ mile journey from the VFW to McGovern.  McGovern’s next walk to school day will take place during the first week of May.

SEPAC Presents: Jessica Minahan

We hope that you will join us for an exciting event as Jessica Minahan, M.Ed., BCBA, returns for an informational evening on how to best support our children with the most challenging behaviors. Ms. Minahan will discuss preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for reducing anxiety and increasing self-regulation, executive functioning and self-monitoring among students.  A flyer for the event can be found here.   The event will take place on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 6:45 PM @ Medway Middle School Auditorium.  All families are welcome.

Turkey Trot

We encourage our community to join us for the 7th annual Medway Turkey Trot.  Walkers, runners, strollers, and family members of all ages are welcome!  Proceeds from the past 6 races have allowed Medway High School to purchase new uniforms for almost every varsity athletic team. The course and registration fees remain unchanged. There will be music and prizes, post race refreshments, and automated timing chips.

The cut-off for T-shirts is November 6th. The order for shirts must be placed with the printer on that date so that the shirts arrive the weekend before the race. Don’t wait to register if you want to ensure you receive a shirt!

Library Task Force

Our Technology Advisory Committee has re-energized with a new function and purpose.  This year, this group is exploring the research and practices that exist regarding school library spaces and how these spaces can be leveraged to enhance student experience in the areas of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking (the 4Cs).  We have engaged a Task Force that is looking to develop a vision based on the research that has been done in this area.  The task force will then forward a proposal to the Superintendent for consideration.  If you are interested in serving on this Task Force, please contact Jessica Sinclair at jsinclair@medwayschools.org.

Thanks to the many community members who supported the Medway Foundation for Education’s Fall fundraiser.  Nearly $4000 was raised in this event and will be used to support grant funding requests from our educators to enhance programs for our students.
