School Committee Update

Superintendent Status

Dear Community:

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Residents of Medway,

On behalf of the Medway School Committee, I would like to update you as to the status of the superintendent search.  Last year when Dr. Evans submitted her letter of resignation to the school committee, the committee opted not to launch a full search for her replacement and, instead, chose to conduct an internal search for a candidate to assume the role of interim superintendent for the 2015-2016 school year.  We did this with two goals in mind:  (1) to maintain continuity of leadership in the short term; and (2) to be able to conduct a comprehensive search across a broader frame of time believing doing so would provide a wider pool of quality applicants.  Dr. Pires, the district’s assistant superintendent, was appointed to the interim superintendent position and assumed his duties effective July 1, 2015.

For a school committee there is no greater responsibility than the selection of the superintendent.  It is our charge to select a candidate whose skills and accomplishments best complement the needs of the district.  Concurrent with this search process, we are also in the midst of developing a long-term strategic plan for the district.  It is of paramount importance that we identify and retain a capable leader with high expectations who can implement the vision for our schools being developed through that strategic planning process.

The school committee has discussed various superintendent search processes at its meetings this fall and now must determine the specific search process we will follow for this position.  At the school committee’s next meeting, on October 15, 2015, Dr. Bettencourt, the executive director of NESDEC and a former Medway superintendent, will outline for the committee search options to consider and evaluate as the committee determines which course of action is in the best interest of our students, staff, and stakeholders.

The school committee invites and encourages all residents to be a part of this process.  Please consider attending our October 15, 2015 school committee meeting.  As part of the agenda, there will be a public comment section where you can share your thoughts with the committee.

Respectfully yours,

Diane Borgatti, Chair

Medway School Committee
