Superintendent's Message

July 29, 2015

Dear Medway families,

I hope that you are enjoying the beautiful weather and time with family and friends.  As you may know, I will serve as the interim superintendent for the 2015-2016 school year.  I am humbled and honored to take on this role.  After serving in Medway for the past five years, I have grown to admire our community and our schools.  I have had the privilege of working with the most dedicated and caring administrators and teachers in my career.  During my service as interim superintendent, we will continue to build on our past successes to ensure that all of our students have a high-quality educational experience that meets their needs.  In addition, we will focus on improving communication and identifying new opportunities for community involvement in our district.

While the summer is typically a time to slow down and refresh for the coming year, the Medway schools have been busy.  Below are some updates:

New Administrators

During the spring we were active in hiring new administrators in our district.  Gabrielle Abrams will serve as the assistant superintendent.  At Medway High School, Timothy McCarron will serve as principal, and David List will serve as dean of academics and student activities.  Ryan Quigley will serve in the role of middle school assistant principal. We were pleased that each of the search processes led us to hire experienced, highly regarded leaders.  There will be many opportunities to meet our new administrators in the weeks and months ahead.

With two new administrators at Medway High School, Principal McCarron has scheduled two “Meet and Greet” events.  Tonight, July 29, and August 12 interested families are encouraged to join the Medway High School leadership team at 7:00 p.m., in the high school auditorium.  We hope that you will have the opportunity to participate.

McGovern Window Replacement

The replacement of windows at McGovern School is underway and expected to be completed by the second week of August.  Thanks to the Medway School Committee, our community, and the MSBA for their support of this project.  Upgraded windows will have a direct and positive impact on the learning environment at McGovern School.  Please remember that the McGovern School is closed during this construction period.  Anyone needing registration materials for kindergarten or grade 1 should contact Burke-Memorial School at (508) 533-3266.

Burke-Memorial Parking Lot

This past winter was very destructive to the parking lot at Burke-Memorial School.  Repaving of the front parking lot and walkways is currently underway.   We expect that the paving will be complete within the next two weeks, due to the town’s generous and timely  support.  If you are visiting Burke-Memorial School, please park in the Center Street lot and follow the path to the back entrance of the school.

Strategic Planning

A priority for the school committee and me has been the development of a strategic plan.  While the final document itself should provide the school and greater Medway community with a road map toward a future vision for success, we feel that the process of developing such a plan is just as valuable.  Over the next few months, we will be reaching out to all Medway constituencies to seek their reflections on: strengths, weaknesses, areas of opportunity, and potential threats to these opportunities.  This process will allow us to gather a comprehensive view of the community’s priorities when it comes to serving the future of our community, our children.  We strongly encourage you to share your voice in the process.   Please stay tuned for more information coming soon.

Summer Professional Development Activities

Just as summer is a prime opportunity to enhance our buildings and grounds, so too is it a terrific opportunity to enhance the professional capacities of our educators and leaders.  This summer features some exciting professional learning and collaboration focused on school and district goals.  In response to their program overview from the 2014-15 school year, our wellness teachers have continued to refine the competencies and expectations of student success at each of their grade levels.  Building based instructional support teams are focusing on ensuring that their systematic approaches for identifying students in need of additional support and enrichment continue to be refined.  Our k-4 teachers continue to grow as they work with the instructional framework of Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.  Several teachers from McGovern and Burke-Memorial will be traveling to Columbia University’s Teacher’s College from August 10-14 for an intensive professional development experience.  Finally, our building-based crisis teams convened, with the assistance of local law enforcement, to conduct a tabletop exercise and further refine our emergency procedures.

Transition to Google Platform

Effective August 17, 2015, all Medway Public Schools’ e-mail communication will migrate to the Google platform.  As education enhancements through Google applications and Google Classroom continue to be increasingly integrated within our classrooms, movement to the google platform, and transition to Gmail will allow us to more effectively use the tools available within the platform.  We planned the transition during the summer, at a time with the least amount of email traffic. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have not received a timely response.  As of August 17, all Medway Public Schools email addresses will end in the suffix “”

Enjoy the warm days ahead!

Armand Pires, Ph.D.
