Superintendent's Update: Winter

Dear Medway Families:

The winter of 2015 has certainly been one for the record books! We are very grateful for the hard work of the Medway Department of Public Services, the town administrator, fire and police departments, and our own custodial/maintenance staff for working hard to keep us safe and to expedite storm clean-up. We are fortunate to have only missed three days thus far and thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make the right call for delays and no-school days. As of today, our last day of school will be Tuesday, June 23rd.

Here are some district updates:

  • You may recall that a Calendar Study Committee reviewed possible changes to the school calendar in order to support an earlier ending date in June. As part of that effort, the committee conducted a parent survey and found that there was no clear consensus about changing any part of the current calendar, with the possible exception of the religious holidays. Any changes to the school calendar would need to be negotiated with represented employee groups, but the committee thought it might be helpful to conduct a faculty/staff survey to determine likely attendance on the religious holidays. On any given day, the district is able to hire a limited number of substitutes, so absences above 5% of staff members would make it difficult to open schools. The survey results showed that 45% of respondents would not be in attendance on Good Friday and 9% of respondents would not be in attendance on the Jewish holidays. Since the likely absence rate exceeds our capacity to provide substitutes, the Calendar Study Committee is not recommending any changes to our current school calendar.
  • We would like to congratulate Medway High School’s music teachers and students, who were well-represented by the selection of four MHS students for the All-State Music Festival: Jess Green, Brianna Parrella, Alyssa Palladino and Hannah Tight.
  • The school department FY16 Budget will be presented at this week’s school committee meeting: February 5, 2015, at 7 p.m. in the school committee presentation room, Medway Middle School.
  • We hope all families and staff members have a restful winter break from February 16 to 20, 2015.
  • The next superintendent’s chat will be held from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. in the school committee presentation room on Thursday, February 26th. All are welcome to attend this informal discussion session.
  • A special town meeting will be held at Medway High School at 7 p.m. on March 9th.  An important warrant article will come forward for a vote to enable the school department to replace windows at McGovern School. The MSBA will provide 50% reimbursement for the costs of this project.

Until I see you next, please stay safe and warm. As always, please contact me directly with any questions or concerns.
