First Week of School News!


Dear Families,


The new school year is off to a great start!  Both students and staff have had very successful first days of school.  Students are settling into routines, taking tours of the school, and beginning to engage in learning experiences in their classrooms.  We are thrilled to welcome back our returning families as well as the many new families to McGovern School. 


As we begin the year, you can expect communication from McGovern to settle into a regular rhythm.  Families will receive regular updates from your child’s teacher as well as my “News and Announcements” emails every two weeks.  It is our hope that these updates enable families to feel connected to the learning and special activities at school. 


Here is the news and a couple of announcements from our first week in school:


  • On Thursday afternoon, we participated in a practice fire drill.  Students did an amazing job lining up and getting out of the school quickly and quietly.  Great work!


  • Many of our McGovern teachers maintain websites and blogs as a way to communicate regularly with families.  Additionally, McGovern has a twitter account @McGovernElem.  Sometimes, we may post photos of the students.  If you would prefer that your child’s photo NOT be posted, please send us a brief letter opting out of photo publication (Medway Policy #88 in the handbook) by September 15th.  Thank you for your help with this!


  • We are looking for 1-2 parent volunteers to join our McGovern School Council this year.  Council members are responsible for assisting the principal in four major areas:
    • Establishing goals for the school
    • Identifying the educational needs of students
    • Reviewing the budget
    • Formulating a school improvement plan

            Additionally, the council will be asked to provide general feedback to the principal and to suggest recommendations for improvement.  Due to the role of the council in guiding our school, members are asked to make a two year commitment and be available to attend all council meetings.  Dates for the 2017-2018 meetings are as follows:

September TBD                     December 12             March 27

October 24                             January  23                April 10

November 28                          February 13              May 29



 State guidelines specify that the number of parent representatives must be equal to the number of teachers who serve on the council.  State law also requires that parent members be selected by the parents of student attending the school, in elections held by the local recognized parent-teacher organization.  Therefore, elections for student council parent members will be sponsored by the Medway Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (MEPTO) and held during our Open House on Wednesday, September 27th.

Prospective candidates are asked to indicate their interest in serving on the council in an email to me before the close of the school day on Friday, September 15, 2017.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.


  • As mentioned above, please mark your calendars for Open House on Wednesday, September 27th.  This night includes visits to PreK and K classrooms from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and visits to the grade 1 classrooms from 6:50-7:50 p.m..  This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and learn about the curriculum and the expectations for the year ahead.  We hope to see you there. 


  • Picture Day is scheduled for Thursday, September 14th.  We will share more information about Picture Day in the coming week.
