January 22, 2018 McGovern Family Communication

Hello, McGovern families,

Let me first say, it has been an absolute privilege working with your children at the McGovern School during this transitional period. McGovern is a special place where I’ve witnessed impressive demonstration of learning by students, faculty and staff alike. I’ve also appreciated all of the words of support that I have received from the community.

We are continuing our regular school schedule, while also preparing for the arrival of our interim principal, Mrs. Linda Weene. Mrs. Weene has several overlap days scheduled with me in the upcoming weeks so that she is best equipped to ensure a supportive and successful transition to this role.  She will be here full time beginning Friday, February 9 and will support the McGovern School until the end of the school year.  We will be sure to keep you informed as this transition progresses.

Below, please find several pieces of information as well as important upcoming events.

As shared in the January 4, 2018 parent communication, in an effort to ensure equity of experience in physical education for our kindergarten and grade 1 students, we will be shifting our schedule at our mid-year point, starting the week of January 22.

During the first half of the year, some students participated in PE once a week, while other students participated in PE twice per week. This schedule shift will allow those students who were scheduled for PE once a week, to now participate twice a week through the remainder of the school year.

Students who participated in PE twice a week during the first half of the year, will engage in  another allied arts class in place of the second PE beginning the week of January 22.

Kindergarten registration packets will be available for parents to pick up beginning February 1 in the McGovern Elementary School Office, 9 Lovering Street, Medway, the Superintendent’s Office, 45 Holliston Street, Medway and online. These packets should be completed and returned at the time of registration.  Kindergarten registration will be held in the Library of the McGovern Elementary School, 9 Lovering Street, on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

To be eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year, a child must reach the age of five (5) years on or before August 31, 2018. It is not necessary for the child to accompany the parent/guardian to the registration. A kindergarten screening process for students will be announced at a later date.

As has been discussed during the development of next year’s budget (FY19) development process, tuition free full day kindergarten is currently being explored for implementation during the 2018-2019 school year.  The Superintendent is expected to offer his recommendation at the February 1 School Committee meeting.  Kindergarten deposits for our full day Kindergarten program will not be accepted until later in the spring (if at all) to allow for the budget process to unfold.

Preschool registration, procedures and lottery information will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Students are enjoying outdoor play! Please help your children to remember boots and snow pants so they are able to play in the snow.  Thank you for your support with this!
