More Spring News

We have had a few brief days of spring weather, or was it actually summer that we recently experienced? Hopefully, McGovern families are still enjoying a fabulous April break before we all hit the ground running on Monday, April 24th. From that day until the end of the school year, which is now Wed., June 21st, we have lots and lots to do. Here is a preview of dates throughout May that we have established so far.

Kindergarten Family Orientation Night, Tuesday, April 25th:

I look forward to welcoming our newest families to McGovern on Tuesday night, 4/25 at 6 p.m. Our instructional coach, school nurse, school secretary, some of our kindergarten teachers, and I will share important information about the upcoming screening process, summer kindergarten, open houses, a typical day in K, and hopefully some valuable hints on kindergarten readiness. Please join us in the McGovern cafeteria from 6 -7 p.m. when we will be happy to answer any questions you may have as well.

Please let any new neighbors or friends who may have not registered children for kindergarten yet, that although the formal registration date has passed, we are always accepting new registrations. Simply stop by the McGovern office and we will be happy to welcome you and help you in the process.

“Weather or Not” Enrichment Program, Thursday, April 27th and Friday, April 28th

Thanks to the generosity of MEPTO, our kindergarten classes will enjoy the experience of having a scientist from High Touch/ High Tech present a program on weather in each of the individual kindergarten classrooms on 4/27 and 4/28. These one hour sessions met with wide acclaim last year and we look forward to the return visit.

Elementary Principals’ Tea, Wednesday, May 3rd, 6:30 p.m., MEPTO Meeting, May 3rd 7 p.m.

Elementary Principals, Amanda Luizzi and Peggy Yanuskiewicz will be available to meet with parents for a spring tea at the McGovern School at 6:30 on 5/3. Immediately following this event, MEPTO will hold their last scheduled meeting of the year.

Spring Walk to School Day, Thursday, May 4

The McGovern community will once again get energized before school by walking a ½ mile route to school on the morning of May 4th. Permission slips will be coming home early the week of April 24th. This has become a much beloved tradition at our school, so much so that we participate twice a year. Please look for the permission slip, return it in a timely fashion, and join us in our great beginning to a school day if you can, and weather permits of course.

Spring Scholastic Book Fair, May 9th – May 11th

The Scholastic Book Fair will return for three days in May. This final visit of the year gives families an opportunity to purchase reasonably priced books for summer reading or for birthday gift giving if they choose. Children can visit during their library time (or during a special scheduled time for some classes which will be identified on the Scholastic flier sent home very soon.) The book fair will also be open on Tuesday, May 9th from 3:30 – 6 p.m. for after school shopping. Any purchases are completely voluntary and if children do not wish to participate, they simply attend library as usual.

School Council, May 9th

The final scheduled meeting of the McGovern School Council will take place on Tuesday, May 9th at 3:15. We will be finalizing the School Improvement Plan for the 2017- 2018 school year at this important meeting.

Art Walk, May 11th

The parents of the kindergarten and grade one art students of Mrs. Jackson are invited to return to school to view the masterpieces of their children on Thursday, May 11th.  Kindergarten families are welcome to visit from 5 – 5:45 p.m. and first grade families from 6 – 6:45 p.m. They can tour the pods and view the displays of fine work created in K and grade one art classes throughout the year. I am sure you will be impressed!

Community Read Aloud, Thursday, May 18th

We will enjoy another one of our most valued days when we invite community members to read to each and every one of the classrooms on the morning of May 18th. Of course, teachers and students read every day and often throughout the day, but there is something very special about having a guest reader in the classroom to share a beloved book.

Early Release Day, Friday, May 19th

Full day students will be dismissed at 12 on Friday, 5/19 so that teachers may participate in professional development opportunities. Morning preschool and morning kindergarten will be dismissed as usual, but there will be no P.M. preschool. Full day K and grade one will be dismissed at noon and no lunch will be served.

Salute Our Vets Program, Friday, May 26th

The first grade classes of Mrs. O’Connell, Mrs. Poulos, and Mrs. Fogaren will present a special Memorial Day program on May 26th at 9:30 a.m. Some specially invited veteran guests and the families of the students in rooms 10, 11, and 12 are invited to this special presentation called “Salute Our Vets”.
