News and Notes from Mrs. Weene - February 2018

February 2018
Dear McGovern School Families,

Now that I’ve completed my first full week as the interim principal at McGovern School    I’d like to share some brief thoughts and reflections with you. In my first News and Notes to the staff I offered this “snapshot” of observations I’d made during my first few days at McGovern.  This is what I wrote...

To the McGovern Staff:

“Over the years I’ve found that one way to gauge and “measure” the success of a school is to watch the children as they enter the building in the morning.  Do they enter with energy and excitement? Do they seem confident and sure of themselves? Are they chatting with friends or reaching out to their teachers who are greeting them with smiles and a “good morning?”  At McGovern School I know that my response to these questions would be, “Yes! Yes! Yes!”

McGovern School is a wonderful place for young children to learn and grow!  Although my first week was a whirlwind of activities, new schedules and “getting to know you” times. I loved greeting the children as they arrived in the morning and waving goodbye as they waited in their bus lines at the end of the school day. Please know that I’ll be stopping by at the car and preschool drop-off loops more regularly after vacation.  It’s a great time to say hello to parents and also helps me keep an eye towards ensuring safety for all our children.

I’m so pleased to have had a chance to meet some of you as you’ve dropped by in the office or spent time volunteering in our classrooms. I’m hopeful that other members of our McGovern community will have a chance to stop by for an informal “Meet and Greet” with me on Tuesday, February 27th from 9:30-10:30 or Monday, March 5th from 3:30-4:30.  Please know that my door is always open!

February vacation offers a time to regroup, refresh, and remember that spring is really just around the corner!  This is the time of year when our young students are typically feeling confident and are enthusiastically using the new skills that they’ve learned in their classrooms and around the school. I’m looking forward to observing the excitement of learning throughout the school day. Please be assured that as we make our way through the second half of the school year we’ll continue to strengthen the home/school partnership by working together to provide your children with the skills they need for continued learning success.

I hope you are having a fun February vacation time!  I’ll look forward to greeting the children and the McGovern staff when they return to school on Monday, February 26th.

Warm regards,
Linda Weene

Math Morning Fun!

Get Ready! Math Morning is coming to McGovern School!  On Math Morning parents/guardians are invited to play engaging and fun math games with their child at our school. These games are typically games that have been introduced during Kindergarten and Grade One Everyday Math lessons or that support the skills and standards for math taught at the various grade levels.  The goal is for our  parents/guardians and children to play the math games together, sharing time with their student and having an opportunity to see the hands on math learning activities that take place each day in all our classrooms at McGovern School!

Please join us for Math Morning Fun:

A message from our Nurse Mrs. McKay

As we are in the midst of winter and hats, scarves, and winter coats are needed, we sometimes see an increase in head lice.  With this in mind, some information about head lice may be helpful.

Head lice is a common childhood condition that affects many families during the school age years. It is often detected on the head with the presence of the adult lice or nits attached to the hair shaft.  Head lice cannot hop, jump, or fly; they crawl.  They are primarily spread by close head to head contact within a family or household.

It may be prudent as a precautionary measure to:

  • Check heads routinely during the year including the summer months; take care not to confuse nits with hair debris.
  • Wear long hair in a ponytail or braid while at school.
  • Teach and remind your child not to share personal items such as hats, brushes, combs, other hair care items, helmets, and headphones.

If you find live lice or nits check your household contacts and contact your child’s health care provider for treatment direction. The student’s education does not need to be disrupted.  We hope you find this information helpful.  Please remember, the school nurse is always available as a resource if you have any questions.  Thank-you.

Medway High School Musical Presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”

The Medway High School Musical will present performances of Disney’s “The Little

Mermaid” on Friday, March 9th at 7:30pm and Saturday, March 10th at 2pm and 7:30pm.

The performances will be held at Medway High School in the Dr. Arthur L. Bettencourt

Auditorium located at 88 Summer Street in Medway.

(note:  Thank-you to members of the High School cast who are coming to McGovern on March 2nd to perform a few songs and “spark” the children’s interest in this family fun musical!)

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved story and the classic animated film. Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Don’t miss this hauntingly beautiful love story with music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright. Over 50 Medway High School students from grades 9-12 are involved in the production of this fishy fable. It will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea”, “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World”.

Tickets are $15 and are available online at .

Tickets will also be on sale at the door until sold out - Cash and Check ONLY. All seating is reserved. For more information and updates, visit us on Facebook at Medway High School presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”.

This wonderful fairy tale for the ages stars Annelise Kealey as Ariel, Brian Gerard as Prince Eric, Charlotte Kealey as the evil sea witch, Ursula and Dan Rice as Ariel’s father, King Triton. Sebastian is played by Daphne Freeman with John Boujnane as Scuttle and Carissa Barry Moilanen as Flounder. Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is presented by special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
