September News

September 18, 2017

Dear Families,

Thank you so much for all your kind words and thoughts over the weekend.  The notes from families, the flowers placed under the McGovern School sign, and the beautiful tributes to Peggy and her leadership have really comforted our school over the past couple of days.  We feel very lucky to have such a supportive and caring community of families.

Here are some News and Announcements for the week:

  • We are looking forward to welcoming you to our Open House on Wednesday, September 27th.  We will welcome our Preschool and Kindergarten parents and guardians from 5:30-6:30 pm.  Our first grade Open House will take place from 6:50-7:50 pm.  Each session will begin in the cafeteria with a brief presentation.  Parents and guardians will then be invited to their child’s classroom for a more detailed information session about the curriculum and how to best support learning at home.  A gentle reminder that our Open House night is just for adults.

  • In collaboration with: the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program, Medway Public Works, the Medway Police Department and Project Alex, Medway Public Schools has mapped out safe walking routes for our K-8 students to use to get to and from school.  These “walking school bus” routes are designed to allow families and groups of students commuting to school to obtain the health benefits of regular walking, while remaining safe.

  • Our first Medway Elementary PTO meeting will be held Tuesday, October 3rd at 6:30 pm in the Memorial School cafeteria (this is a change from McGovern).  The meeting will begin with Mrs. Cooney and Ms. Luizzi for our Principal Talk where they will meet and greet, provide updates, and answer any questions you may have. At 7PM, Dr. Ryan Sherman our Wellness Director will be present our Safe Routes to School program to parents and answer any questions you may have. Lastly, by popular demand we are bringing back safety conversations both in our schools and at home with our schools’ Resource Officer, Lieutenant O'Neill and Detective Sergeant Reardon. We will talk about online safety both at home, school and on cell phones (apps).  It will also be a time to ask any questions about what we should do as parents to keep our children safe and how to respond to an emergency at our schools or town. It is an amazing group opportunity that comes once a year so don't miss it! Lastly, we will have some quick updates from our PTO board with upcoming events and other announcements. We hope to see you there!

Nurse’s Notes

McGovern School will begin the mandated Massachusetts Department of Public Health screenings for kindergarten and first grade students the fourth week of September and continue throughout the fall. Vision screening will be performed on those kindergarten students who have not had the required Pre-School screening within one year of the start of school and all 1st grade students. Hearing screening will be conducted on all kindergarten and 1st graders. Please remind your student to bring and wear his/her glasses every school day, but especially during screening days. Should your child not pass this basic screening, a letter will be sent home asking you to follow-up with your child’s health care provider and/or other appropriate specialists. Parents/guardians may request in writing if they do not want their student to participate. Please notify me by Friday, September 22, 2017.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you!
