First Trimester Grades

The first trimester came to an end on Friday, December 1, 2017.  At this time, we  are experiencing technical difficulties.  We are not able to print your child’s report card and your child’s first trimester grades are not available for you to you view on the portal.  Our IT department is working to correct this issue and once we have an update, we will send another communication.

Semester Courses

Medway Middle School has two courses that meet for a semester (half of the school year).  These courses include any visual arts offering and technology education offering (including Design & Modeling and Automation & Robotics).  These courses present a unique grade reporting challenge since transitioning to three marking periods several years ago.  Last year, we decided to adjust the grade reporting practices for semester courses.  Students will now receive one final grade for visual arts and technology education courses. The first semester grade will be available at the end of the semester, January16, 2018.  The second semester grade will be available on the final report card of the year in June. We believe that this change will more accurately and fairly report student’s progress in semester classes. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Hour of Code

Medway students in grades 5-8 will, once again, participate in the Hour of Code during the week of December 4th. The Hour of Code takes place during computer science education week and is meant to give students a quick peek into the world of programming. Without an initiative like this many individuals would never get the opportunity to discover that they may really enjoy the field of computer science by demystifying what programming is.

In Pursuit of Presents

The Medway Police Department along with our PBIS Team will be collecting Christmas presents for those in need again this year!  Due to the amazing response from the community last year, we would like to make the 2017 holiday season even better!  We are asking for donations of new unwrapped gifts. These gifts will go to the less fortunate children of Medway, as well as other charitable children's groups in the area. We ask that donations be made at the Medway Police Department or at any of the donation events we will be announcing.  Board games, dolls, building toys, art supplies, puzzles, action figures and coloring books are suggested!  There is a collection box in the middle school lobby and Medway Police officers will be at the middle school on Tuesday, December 5th collecting new, unwrapped toys.

Help us make this a special holiday for those in need!

Looking for Donations

Activities/Game During Lunch

As we prepare for cooler weather, we are brainstorming activities that students could choose to do on days that we can not go out during lunch.  We will be accepting donations of gently used games (checkers, chess, Connect Four, or other games that can be played in shorter amounts of time), cards (Uno or playing cards), or coloring pages/activities that students may choose to use.  Donations can be dropped off in the main office.  Thank you.

Makerspace

The middle school makerspace has been in full swing. With roughly 50 students at times using the space after school it has become a place to be. Recently a naming competition was held. The final two choices were put to a vote. With just a narrow margin of victory, The Launch Pad just beat out The Mustang Lab. The Launch Pad is a perfect fit for this space as we move students to begin considering a design thinking model when approaching projects and new learning opportunities. Design thinking is a way to solve problems creatively with a certain level of risk. To assist students and teachers in participating in this process, The Launch Cycle, designed by AJ Juliani and John Spencer is provided as a framework for this kind of learning. In addition to all the existing equipment and resources, recently The Launch Pad has acquired STEM packs of Makey Makey sets and a generous donation from Medway Cable of two video cameras, microphones, and Mac computers with video editing software. We are very excited to begin making our own videos using the green screen.  Due to the high level of use in The Launch Pad, this has also led to a higher demand for donations of materials. If you would like to donate to The Launch Pad you can find a wish list here. All donations can be brought to the main office. In addition to donations, if you are interested in volunteering at The Launch Pad, please send an email to Technology Integration Specialist, Ryan Camire at rcamire@medwayschools.org.  We look forward to seeing this collaborative and creative space grow.

News from the School Nurse...from the Student/Parent Handbook

Medications

All medication, prescription and over the counter medications require a physician’s order and completed parental permission form.  Medication will NOT be given without this.  All prescription medication must be labeled and in a current pharmacy bottle.  All over the counter medication must be in the original packaging.  Medication must be delivered to school by the parent, guardian or responsible adult. Children are not allowed to transport medication unless it is medically indicated and after consultation with the school nurse

The complete guidelines for administration of medication at school from the Department of Public Health can be found on the school website under School Health Office.
