MEDWAY FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION
ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $20,000 IN NEW GRANTS

Funds to Support Teacher-Sponsored
Learning Projects in All Grades

MEDWAY, June 15, 2009 – The Medway Foundation for Education (MFE), a non-profit organization chartered to improve the quality of education in the town’s public schools, has announced the recipients of more than $20,000 in grants.

The money has been awarded for 10 teacher-sponsored projects that enhance classroom learning and foster creativity among students of all ages. This year’s grant winners are:

  • Rachel’s Challenge, High School, $4,000

  • Science Fair Program, Middle School, $2,700

  • Using Technology to Enhance Education, McGovern School, $2,887

  • Math League Program, Middle School, $2,152

  • Math Counts Program, Middle School, $1,680

  • Learning as the Write, High School, $1,500

  • Lending Library, McGovern School, $1,000

  • Accelerated Learning, High School, $1,048

  • Parent Resource Center, Middle School, $800

  • Handheld Assessments in PE, McGovern School, $797

  • Summer Writing Camp, Burke-Memorial School, $1500.

Grant money is generated directly through donations from the community and proceeds from various MFE fundraisers. Most of the grants provided help teachers develop and implement supplementary classroom and speaking programs that are unable to be funded in the yearly school budget.

Dr. Judith Evans, Medway superintendent of schools, said, “Once again, the MFE has demonstrated its dedication and commitment to our school system. The group has been instrumental in significantly enhancing the quality of our educational programs. We need and welcome their ongoing help in achieving our learning goals.”

Richard Kahn, MFE co-president, said, “It’s gratifying to put these funds to work. This is money that has been generously given by residents through various fundraising efforts and private donations. Their dollars are being put to good use in a number of special programs that strengthen the learning process.”

Residents interested in volunteering for MFE activities should contact Rich Kahn at 508-533-5214.

Formed during the summer of 2002, the Medway Foundation for Education (MFE) is a non-profit organization charged with raising capital to fund innovative, educational projects throughout Medway’s public schools. Using moneys generated from community events, contributions, and educational grants, MFE allocates funds through a grant process to teacher-sponsored projects that dramatically impact the quality of education that students receive.

Since its inception, the all-volunteer organization has raised more than $250,000. A total of over $150,000 in grants has been awarded in recent years. The MFE also raises funds through a yearly phone-a-thon and trivia bee. More information is available at www.medwayeducation.org.
