Special Ed Mission

Special education services in Medway are designed with state and federal regulations in mind.  The process in which Individual Education Programs (IEP's) are developed for students with disabilities involves parents, students, special education staff, and general educators in articulating a vision and realistic goals that each student can accomplish with the provision of specially designed instruction and/or related services.  The school district’s goal is to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities in the least restrictive setting.  Parents are encouraged to be partners with the schools in each step of the special education process for determining eligibility and provision of services.  Medway’s Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SPED PAC) meets regularly and is involved with the special education department.  The focus in all Individual Education Programs is on enabling students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.

Special education programs and services in Medway are designed to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities in the least restrictive educational setting. Medway offers several programs to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities including: an integrated pre-school, a full-day kindergarten for children with complex special needs; learning centers; integrated learning programs (Transition program at Memorial and Middle and High School Integrated Learning Programs).  Related services include physical therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, adapted motor groups, counseling and behavioral consultations and specialists.  The professional staff that delivers special education services are certified and trained to work with a wide range of students with specific disabilities.  When the nature and/or severity of the student’s disability is such that a less restrictive environment with use of supplementary aides and services would not meet the student’s needs consideration is given to out-of-district placements.

Medway Public Schools is committed to the use of best practices in education to achieve successful learning outcomes for all students.  The ability to access the curriculum in the least restrictive environment is at the core of this commitment.
