Superintendent's Update - November 8, 2022

Dear Medway families,

We have officially reached the end of the first quarter of the 2022-2023 school year.  This week our middle and high school students finish up their first quarter of learning.  Many students will be completing end-of-quarter assessments or receiving feedback on their learning and progress.  As always, should you have any questions, you are encouraged to reach out to your child’s teacher.

We wanted to take a moment to recognize the achievements of our fall sports athletes as seasons come to a close.  Most teams are competing in the postseason (at the time of writing) and we wish them well in their respective tournaments.   We also wanted to give a shout-out to our middle and high school performing arts students who shared their talents and love of theater in two productions: James and the Giant Peach (middle school) and The Canterbury Tales Or... Geoffrey Chaucer's Flying Circus (high school).  The end of Fall is always a busy time and we are thankful to have been a part of many celebrations.

Please find several updates and informational items below.

Be well,

Armand Pires, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools

Reminder:  No School Friday, November 11, 2022

There will be no school on Friday, November 11, 2022, in observance of Veterans Day.

School Committee Forum on November 3

Thank you to the School Committee for hosting a formal opportunity for our community to share their input regarding the way that the school calendar recognizes the second Monday in October.   After extensive feedback from students and several committee members, and deliberation among the committee, the School Committee voted to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the school calendar starting with the 2023/2024 calendar year.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has provided support for school districts in their efforts to develop more culturally responsive teaching practices and this shift is a reflection of these values and the values in Medway.

PLEASE JOIN US:  November 17 @ 5:30 p.m. Superintendent Chat:  Student Services/Special Education Program Update and Question and Answer Session

We are pleased to kick off our first Superintendent Chat of the 2022-2023 school year with an opportunity for family members to engage in a brief informational update and then a question and answer session with our Student Services Team.  Dr. Ryan Place, Director of Student Services, and Sue Frederick, Assistant Director will be available to answer questions.  This Chat will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Presentation Room at Medway Middle School (Door #7).  All families are welcome.

Superintendent Chats are typically opportunities for Central Office leaders to engage with families around specific topics of interest.   Future Superintendent’s Chats are planned to discuss: Student Assessment (12/1 @5:00 p.m.) and the FY24 Budget Development (2/1 @ 6:00 p.m.).  More information will be shared soon.

District Administrator Shadow Visits

The most important work that happens in the district takes place within classrooms with our students.  Our primary mission to educate students is something we take very seriously and also take great pride in.

In an effort to monitor the experience of students and their educational programs, central office leaders engage in many experiences.  One of the opportunities that we greatly appreciate is the opportunity to walk in the shoes of our students.  Over the course of the year, Dr. Pires, Superintendent, Ms. Abrams, Assistant Superintendent, and Dr. Place, Director of Student Services, will be “shadowing” students in each of our schools.  Families will be notified ahead of time if their child has been randomly selected for this experience and there is no preparation involved.  Dr. Pires, Ms. Abrams, and Dr. Place will follow the student schedules, participate in all classroom learning experiences, and engage in conversation with students about their learning and overall school experience.

We are excited to return to this practice which supports our understanding of our student's needs and programming.

SEPAC Meeting

The Medway SEPAC conducted its latest meeting on November 2, 2022.  During this meeting, the SEPAC proposed an updated schedule of events and workshops throughout the rest of the school year.  After receiving updates from SEPAC School-Based Liaisons, the SEPAC held an open discussion about the Equity Assessment to allow families the opportunity to discuss the Equity Assessment, the impact of the Assessment, and questions about future work to be completed as a result of the assessment.  The next SEPAC meeting will be on January 4, 2023.  For this meeting, the topic of discussion will be about 504 Plans.
