Hello Medway families,
Please find a communication below regarding an incident at the Burke-Memorial School. Given the public nature of the event, we wanted to share this statement with our community.
Be well,
Armand Pires, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
November 4, 2025
Dear Burke-Memorial families:
This morning, as students were arriving for the school day, a student on a bicycle was struck by a school bus.
School staff reacted immediately, providing care to the student and contacting the Medway Police Department and emergency services. The bus was moving slowly, and thankfully, the student was not injured. The student is proceeding with a typical school day.
Following this incident, Medway Public Schools was informed that the driver was taken into custody after a verbal altercation with school staff and police.
The driver works for W.T. Holmes Transportation Company, the District’s contracted transportation provider, and is not a Medway Public Schools employee. The driver had been assigned to routes for Burke-Memorial School, but will no longer be driving for the District.
As a district, our highest priority is making sure your child is safe when they are in our care — whether that’s in class or on the way to and from school. Be assured that we will be meeting with our transportation provider to ensure their hiring practices are in alignment with our vision and values.
Since this incident occurred during arrival, it was seen by many students. Understandably, this may have been upsetting. To support all students, counseling staff and members of the Burke-Memorial Safety Team visited all classrooms to check in with students, assure them that their schoolmate was not injured, and assess the need for support.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns.

Burke-Memorial Elementary School
